What is the process?
A Clear path & dedicated team
The Golden Visa offers a streamlined path to Portuguese residency through investment. Designed for non-EU nationals, it uniquely allows you to obtain European residency—and eventually citizenship—without relocating. With minimal stay requirements and a straightforward process, it’s an ideal solution for families seeking long-term security and global mobility.
Start by choosing a trusted law firm to guide you through the Golden Visa process. With their support, you can obtain your Portuguese tax number (NIF) and open a local bank account—both of which can be done remotely.
The initial application is submitted online for both the investor and any family members. Once approved by AIMA, an in-person appointment is required to collect biometric data from the investor and all accompanying family members, if applicable.
(Year 1)
Once approved, the residence permit is valid for a 2-year period. During this time, the investor and their family members can enjoy benefits such as visa-free travel throughout the Schengen area.
To renew your Golden Visa, you’ll need to show proof of your VIDA investment and that all conditions have been maintained. This includes spending at least 14 days in Portugal over the past two years, retaking biometrics, and providing updated criminal records.
To renew the residence permit, you must prove continued ownership of the VIDA investment and that all investment conditions are still being met. You’ll also need to spend a minimum of 14 days in Portugal over the previous two years, retake biometrics, and submit updated criminal records.
After five years, you have the option to apply for permanent residency or Portuguese citizenship. Alternatively, you can continue renewing the Golden Visa in successive 2-year periods, such as in year 6, year 8, and beyond.

Maria Alvarez Garcia is a Partner at VIDA Advisors, where she oversees tax, legal, structuring, and fundraising.
She previously co-founded a €250M platform and worked at Macquarie Bank, Barclays, and Freshfields in Madrid.
Maria also specializes in delta one trading and holds degrees in Economics, Finance, and Law from Universitat Pompeu Fabra.
José Covas is CIO at VIDA Advisors, leading sourcing, investment, and disinvestments. He is also CEO of Iniciativability, a Portuguese family office and advisory firm.
With nearly 30 years in real estate, José has led valuation and advisory teams at firms like Colliers and Cushman & Wakefield, and co-founded Aura REE.
